Dicks 5&10
—General Experience
There is an argument in our house as to how you pronounce the name. Growing up, my family (Mark) always called it “Dick’s Five and Dime”. However, Jaime has now thrown a wrench in the whole thing and tells me it should be “Dick’s Five and Ten”. When I questioned her as to why we should accept “her” way of calling it, she told me because Dick Hartley (the guy that started Dick’s Five and DIME) was her neighbor growing up so she feels she has more authority in the matter!
Regardless of what you call it, Dick’s is a Branson landmark! I remember growing up in Branson and heading down to Dick’s Five and DIME and checking out their amazing toy selection. It would be so hard to actually say what Dick’s sells. Could I just say that they pretty much have everything! Moreso, they have a little bit of everything that you didn’t ever know that you need!
If your brain can handle the mass amount of things inside the store, you need to go inside of Dick’s Five and DIME, because will your life actually be complete without this experience? One will never know unless they try!
When I was a kid, I would always want my mom to give me a coin for the horse outside. The same horse is there and it was awesome to see my kids on the horse!
My memories of going to Dick’s as a kid are not always the best. I remember how much I loved the stuff in the store, but there were MANY times when the staff was a little crass/grouchy especially to a child. Oftentimes as one ages and returns to places they went as a child, you will realize how you mis-perceived the situation when you were younger. Depending on the day, this may not have been a mis-perception on my behalf. The staff can sometimes snap a little bit!
WORD OF WARNING: The staff are dressed in everyday clothes (typically a t-shirt). It is not always that easy to differentiate who works there vs. who is shopping there! You are typically safe to presume the people behind the cash registers are employees!
“They have almost everything…” -Samuel
—Things to Know
| Time Required: | I actually think that a person could get lost in Dick’s for days and someone might not ever find them! This is a miniature hillbilly version of Harrod’s (in London). No less than 15 minutes. If you are a “looker” then it could be hours. |
| What to Bring: | A sedative? I’m not gonna lie, it can be chaotic! |
| Other Good things to know: | There is NOT a public restroom in Dick’s. The nearest restroom is a couple of minutes walk away. |
| Discounts Available: | None that we noticed. |
—Cost
| Value for the Money: | Many of the items at Dick’s you cannot find anywhere else (at least without having them shipped from the American Picker’s warehouse). Actually their prices for many of their items are fairly competitive even with online retailers. |

Andy's Take (12 Years Old)
I have liked to go to Dick’s 5 & DIME with my Grandma for years. It is a little overwhelming because of the amount of people and the little amount of space. (Dad’s note: Andy used to call it “Dixie’s” for many years)

Samuel's Take (5 years old)
It is a fun place, but it kind of hard to choose what to get because there is so much stuff.

Toby's Take (3 years old)
“I like to buy stuff and kind of don’t like to because there is a lot of stuff”

Sophie's Take (10 years old)
I enjoy getting the sticker books from there. It is a really fun place and I like looking at all the stuff.

Jaime's Take (the Mom)
It is a great place for unique Birthday gifts. I like the nostalgic. The old-school games and books are great. We enjoy the non-mainstream items. It is just a fun trip to go to Dick’s. The kids are always excited to go!

Mark's Take (the Dad)
After my brain injury, this store is a little more than I can handle! Oftentimes, the kids and Jaime will go inside while I wait outside by the horse!
